Monitoring the effect of scrapie control policies that use genetics in different countries *

Contract nr: QLRT-CT-2000-01733
Project type: DM (Demonstration Project)
Starting date:
Duration: 36 months
Total cost: 3,251,979 EUR
EC Contribution: 1,138,193 EUR
Scientific Officer:
Research topic: 5.1.1. Sustainable agriculture/Animal Systems

Abstract:
In this project we want to determine the effect of introducing a genotype programme to reduce TSE incidence in the evolution of genotype frequencies, incidence of clinical disease, prevalence of infection and on relevant production traits, including fertility parameters as well as on other diseases and mortality rates. The results will be used to create mathematical and genetic models that can help to determine an optimal breeding strategy for scrapie control.

Objectives:
1. To determine the effect of introducing a genotype programme on the evolution of genotype frequencies, incidence of clinical scrapie and prevalence of scrapie infection.
2. To determine the effect of introducing a genotype programme on relevant production traits including fertility, prevalence of other diseases and mortality rates.
3. Investigation of how to optimise a genotype programme using mathematical and genetic models.
4. Relate epidemiological and genetic models in order to predict and measure the efficiency/effect of the use of resistant rams.
