Abstract:
The ultimate aim of this work is to develop a framework for the implementation of Fisheries Ecosystem Plans in Europe. This will be achieved through the involvement of marine scientists, social scientists and stakeholders. Fisheries Ecosystem Plans incorporate ecosystem conservation into fisheries management. This project will provide an in-depth study into the factors affecting the dynamics of major components of the ecosystem and the trophic links between them, with particular emphasis on the influence of fishing. Having thus identified the key components and links in the ecosystem, we will use socio-economic techniques to inform policy-makers as to the effects of fishing on ecosystem dynamics and possible controls in the form of a draft Fisheries Ecosystem Plan.
