Research topic: 5.3.1. Multifunctional management of forests

Abstract:
Mountain birch is the dominant tree species in the Sub-Arctic region in Europe, and covers vast areas in the North Atlantic region and northern Fennoscandia. The birch forests have been subjected to extensive agroforestry practices throughout centuries. To understand the limits for sustainable utilisation of the mountain birch forests, defining the human interactions with birch is essential. Our project will therefore focus on (i) studying the multiple use of birch both in the industry, for handicraft, in tourism and recreation, and the influence by and on agriculture. (ii) testing out birch ecotypes that are suitable for restoration of forests, (iii) studying the interaction between birch and its most important domestic and wild herbivores in order to estimate the optimal grazing pressure according to long-term productivity modelling, and (iv) investigating the potential for sustainable use of birch and the birch forest ecosystem. These aims will be achieved by an interdisciplinary approach, and their implications for future management of European forests will be specified for different climate and management scenarios.
