Innovative models of critical key indicators as planning and decision support for sustainable rural development and integrated cross border regional management in former Iron Curtain areas, based on north to south European reference studies *

Contract nr: QLRT-CT-2000-01401
Project type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Starting date:
Duration: 36 months
Total cost: 3,645,280 EUR
EC Contribution: 1,926,680 EUR
Scientific Officer:
Research topic: 5.5. Sustainable development of rural and other relevant areas

Abstract:
The project is focused on a multi-sectoral integrated methodology for decision-making in sustainable rural development enhancing territorial competitiveness. It is based on the development of an innovative toolset incorporating Geographical Information Systems (GIS), system dynamics and indicator modelling integrating rural areas natural and human capital and sectors like agriculture, energy, fisheries, forestry, industry, small business, tourism and transport. Six transnational areas along the former Iron Curtain will serve as practical test applications. The consortium constitutes a complementary team with five partners from EU and six from candidate and other countries. The three-year project will result in a prototype of an integrated methodology and tool system, six reference studies with identification and formulation of local development strategies, and an indicator system reference model.

Objectives:
The Iron Curtain project is dedicated to the overall goal of providing territorial competitiveness for rural areas with direct implications for employment and conditions in rural and other relevant areas and reduction in the vulnerability of the relevant sectors. Diversification, response to scocietal demands for sound environmental practices, and production of renewable resources will add to sustainable development. The necessary innovative integrated methodology to support interactive planning and decisions will be developed. It allows processing of complex and highly structured regional data to deduce viable scenarios in agriculture and rural development. Six transnational reference areas along the former Iron Curtain will serve as testing and validation areas representing highly contrasting areas in Europe in terms of integration and demand, and providing a strong European dimension to the envisaged research concept.
