Contract nr: QLK5-CT-1999-01349
Project type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Starting date: 01-02-2000
Duration: 48 months
Total cost: 2,402,100 EUR
EC Contribution: 1,761,431 EUR
Scientific Officer: Pierre VAN ASBROECK
Research topic: 5.3.1. Multifunctional management of forests

Abstract:
The objective of Nat-Man is to help resolve the challenge of sustainable forest management (SFM). The aim of the project is European beech forests, which represent a large resource for both timber production, biodiversity conservation and life quality. Improved beech management will be a major contribution to the multifunctional utilisation of European forest resources (Key Action 5.3). The project delivers scientifically founded policy recommendations and management guidelines for SFM, based on the scientific axiom that nature-based management is a powerful tool in achieving SFM. The scientific work behind these deliverables ranges from natural forests as a reference point, over a detailed scientific comparison a natural and managed forest, through biological and economical modelling. The objectives of the Nat-Man project will be achieved by a multidisciplinary team of scientists and end-users from eastern and western Europe.
