ROCKFOR - Forest interrelation efficiency of the protective function of mountain forest against rockfalls

Contract nr: QLK5-CT-2000-01302
Project type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Starting date: 01-01-2001
Duration: 36 months
Total cost: 2,862,897 EUR
EC Contribution: 1,163,713 EUR
Scientific Officer: Alexandros ARABATZIS
Research topic: 5.3.1. Multifunctional management of forests

Abstract:
Forests are multi-functional ecosystems and their sustainable management is one of the European Union's priorities nowadays. Forest managers have this multi-functional perception of forest lands. However, a major function of forests is not taken into account: their protective function against rockfall risks. The objective of this project is to develop measures and methods to characterise the efficiency of forest stands against rockfalls. All the results of this project will be used to develop a Strategic Planning Tool (SPT) designed to optimise sustainable management of different types of forests with respect to their protective function against rockfalls. To achieve those objectives 8 work-packages are planned. This SPT will be a decision-support system, used by forest managers, construction engineers and local authorities in mountain land management.
