European decapod fisheries: assessment and management

Contract nr: QLK5-CT-1999-01272
Project type: CA (Concerted Action)
Starting date: 01-02-2000
Duration: 36 months
Total cost: 693,160 EUR
EC Contribution: 691,256 EUR
Scientific Officer: Dominique LEVIEIL
Research topic: 5.1.2. Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture

Abstract:
European decapod crustacean fisheries are poorly managed because stock assessments are weak and, as a result management policies, may be inadequate. The objective of this Concerted Acton (EDFAM) is to undertake a review of the data collection and stock assessment programmes in Europe and to recommend new approaches. This will include issues of standardistation of data and methods to enable comparability accross regions and new approaches to assessment that specifically recognise stock structure and life history features. In addition, the management structures for these fisheries will be considered. Optimising the acquisition of data from industry, implementation of policies within the socio-economic framework, recognising local preference to the resources and the biological metapopulation structure of the stocks will be discussed. EDFAM will provide a framework for future management of these resources.
