Costing the impact of demersal fishing on marine ecosystem processes and biodiversity *

Contract nr: QLRT-CT-2000-00993
Project type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Starting date:
Duration: 36 months
Total cost: 3,203,115 EUR
EC Contribution: 1,353,026 EUR
Scientific Officer:
Research topic: 5.1.2. Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture

Abstract:
COST-IMPACT will help decision-makers integrate fishing and environmental policy by determining:

1. How demersal fishing impacts on the biodiversity of marine benthos and the ecosystem goods and services they provide;
2. How these impacts influence other marine ecosystem processes; and
3. What the likely economic values of marine ecosystern goods and services are and how these values are affected by fishing.

COST-IMPACT will determine whether a balance can be achieved between the economic value of a fishery and the impacts of fishing on marine ecosystems and the economic value of the goods and services they provide. To achieve this, COST-IMPACT will: collate data on effects of fishing on benthic communities; experimentally assess ecosystem goods and services; empirically model effects of fishing on marine ecosystems; model the values of the goods and services and of the fisheries and the effects of changes in fishing effort on these values.
