Using genetics to improve the quality and safety of sheep products

Contract nr: QLK5-CT-2000-00656
Project type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Starting date: 01-10-2000
Duration: 42 months
Total cost: 1,739,355 EUR
EC Contribution: 1,320,002 EUR
Scientific Officer: Michel VAN DEN BOSSCHE
Research topic: 5.1.1. Sustainable agriculture/Animal Systems

Abstract:
The project addresses the safety and quality of food in the sheep production chain, using genetics. Partners from France, UK, Italy and Spain with expertise in (i) milk and meat sheep, (ii) traits related to animal health and product quality, and (iii) genetics, are brought together to share resources and results in an attempt to create a critical mass of researchers. The project will: (i) share genetic resource populations, (ii) share the genotyping of the animals, (iii) measure traits related to food quality and safety, including CLA of the milk, mastitis resistance, nematode parasite resistance and nasal botfly resistance, (iv) study candidate genes and functional genomics for thoses traits, (v) perform biological and QTL analysis of the data. Outputs include knowledge on food safety and quality traits, QTL and candidate genes, and implementation strategies. Participation of breeding organisations means that the results will be applied immediately to the sheep sector.
