Research topic: 5.5. Sustainable development of rural and other relevant areas

Abstract:
Peri-urbanisation from the rural point of view is an important question which, to date, has been studied from the urban point of view only, and not on the European scale. It questions economic and social mutations in these rural areas which are under urban pressure. It also raises the problem of the future of agriculture and competition for land. The research proposed here will characterise the dynamics involved, first of all by characterising the existing forms of peri-urbanisation and secondly by carrying out comparative analyses on the urban processes at work and rural proper dynamics. To achieve those objectives six workpackages have been planned. They will lead to two types of results: quantitative, with a typology of diversity of peri-urban areas, and qualitative, with the characterisation of transformations and emerging conflicts. NEWRUR will propose new tools and recommendations to assist in implementing specific policies which are territorially suited.
