Background

Whilst around 1-2% of European adults have been diagnosed food allergic, perceptions are that it is common, with 1/3 of adults believing they suffer from food allergy. Such concerns and the dangers posed by allergenic foods to the severely allergenic, means provision of good quality information to the public on food allergies is imperative. Communication strategies relevant to the food allergy area will be developed to promote the provision of visible, credible sources of information, which are appropriate to the different stakeholders, including consumers, industry and regulators. These will be refined within the arena of current food allergy research. Recommendations will be implemented by developing a web platform including an electronic database on allergenic foods.

Objectives

The main objective is to develop communication strategies to promote the provision of visible, credible sources of information on food allergies appropriate to consumers, industry & regulators. This will be met by:

  • DEFINING the relevant communication issues, taking into account the needs, attitudes & value systems of different stakeholder groups across the EU;
  • DEVELOPING a set of recommendations & strategies for communication of information relevant to each of the stakeholder groups;
  • DEVELOPING a credible Food Allergy Information Platform including an electronic database which implements recommendations developed in objective 2;
  • REFINING communication strategies within the arena of current food allergy research in Europe funded at national level & through RTD projects within Framework VI.
(expected) Results and achievements
  • Multidisciplinary network to interact with key stakeholders in allergenic risk management and communication;
  • Documents summarising current information provision across the EU, identifying any gaps;
  • Risk communication strategies targeted at stakeholder groups which address cultural, language and educational differences;
  • Web platform with allergenic food materials database integrated with other credible sources, allergy website jumpstation and summaries on current EU allergy research.
