GA²LEN – Global Allergy and Asthma European Network

1st Annual Conference

Ghent (Belgium), 19 April 2005

First European conference of the Allergy and Asthma Research Network

19 April 2005

Ghent Expo Conference Centre HOLIDAY INN
(Malltekouter 3, 9051 Ghent, Belgium)

The first annual conference of the European Research Network of Excellence GA²LEN will take place on 19 April 2005 at the Holiday Inn Expo Ghent in Belgium. GA²LEN is a European Union funded research project with special interest in Allergy and Asthma. It is a consortium of 25 leading European research teams and two societies (EAACI and EFA) committed to work with each other and to establish an European Research Area of excellence in the field of allergy and asthma. Integration is the key word in all its activities. A proposed grant of 14.4 million Euros for a period of 5 years will contribute towards linking scientific research centres of excellence throughout Europe under the Sixth Framework Programme for Research. The network will accelerate the application of research results to clinical practice, patients' needs and policy development, as well as promoting training and integration between public and private sectors. This move reflects recognition of the growing concern among European citizens about rising prevalence of allergy and asthma.

Participants at the first annual meeting of the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network (GA²LEN) learn about progress made in the first year of the existence of this EU-funded “Network of Excellence” in research on allergies and asthma. Professor Paul van Cauwenberge, the Belgian GA²LEN coordinator, will describe the establishment of a research platform for the standardisation of epidemiological surveys, common basic research and clinical trials, a website and intranet to support communication among the network’s scientists and clinicians, a regular newsletter, and summer school programme. Several scientific programmes have been defined, two pilot joint projects have been launched, and several scientific reviews on birth cohorts, on IgE sensitization, and on the effects of cleaning products on the development of asthma have been completed.

The Global Allergy & Asthma European Network (GA²LEN) is a network of centres with high clinical and experimental research competence across Europe conducting and providing platforms for clinical, transnational, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research. Currently among the 25 partners in GA²LEN, there are also two societies: the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), which is a scientific organisation providing training and continuous education in allergy, and the European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Associations (EFA), a patients’ organisation.
For a list of all GA²LEN partners, please see “Partners” in the “Professional” or “Public” section of the project’s website:
