EurOCEAN 2010 and the Ostend Declaration reinforce the importance of marine science in effective maritime policy making and how it can contribute to Europe’s societal and economic development.

The EurOCEAN 2010 Conference, which took place in Ostend on 12-13 October 2010, provided a unique opportunity for the European marine science community to consider, discuss and respond to new policy developments and achievements since the last EurOCEAN Conference (Aberdeen 2007), and to highlight new challenges and opportunities for marine research in the next decade.

A new publication, 'EurOCEAN 2010 Conference: Grand challenges for marine research in the next decade' is now available online. It includes the full text of the Ostend Declaration, which calls for the recognition that, “The Seas and Oceans are one of the Grand Challenges for the 21st Century”.
