A dedicated website on the 'Healthy and Productive Seas and Oceans' Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) has been launched.

The website provides all information relevant to developments under the new JPI, endorsed by the Competitiveness Council in 2010.

The JPI for Healthy and Productive Seas and Oceans seeks to pool national research efforts, to better coordinate actions taken at national and EU level for making the most of marine resources in a sustainable way, while understanding and mitigating the impact of climate change on the marine environment and coastal areas.

From the new website:
"Seas and Oceans provide an essential part of our wealth and well-being. The fast growing global population will increasingly depend from marine food sources (including sustainable aquaculture) Moreover oceans and seas offer a large unexploited potential from underexplored marine biodiversity and marine renewable energy and play a crucial role in developing transport modalities and tourism activities. But oceans and seas are also under huge pressure from human activities and climate change. The growing vulnerability of coastal areas, increasingly crowded coastal waters, the key role of the oceans in the climate system and the continuous deterioration of the marine environment all call for a stronger focus on our oceans and seas."
