Due to the complexity of the challenge at European and International level, and to the increasing policy requirements, there has been increased support for research activities in marine and maritime issues over the different Framework Programmes:

Although maritime research is not a single thematic priority within any of the FPs, a wide range of marine-related research activities are undertaken under the different thematic priorities managed by Directorates responsible for Environment, Transport, Energy, Fisheries, etc. (reflecting its cross-cutting nature).
