| Europe is facing many challenges,
including how to guarantee road quality and make vehicles safer, to drive
without polluting, to reduce traffic congestion and promote other modes
of transport which are more ecological or community-based. But these challenges
are so great that they cannot be taken up in a purely national context.
They require a European response. They call for the mobilisation of energy,
talents and creative forces on a larger scale.
With the support of the European Union, numerous research projects that
have been devised have set out to find solutions to some of the more difficult
questions concerning road traffic. They clearly illustrate that priority
has been given, not to 'technical matters for their own sake', but to
scientific and technological advances which help to improve the living
conditions of millions of people in a concrete way.
