commitment to the planet is unquestionable. The European Commission has
been funding groundbreaking environmental research projects since the
early 1970s. These studies have provided valuable scientific insights
into the world around us and developed a wealth of expertise throughout
Europe that we can draw on to tackle the problems ahead.
Many completed projects have identified problems and suggested ways of
solving them with a view to providing input to EU policies. In the future,
research and environmental monitoring will continue to be a priority,
but more projects will focus on addressing socio-economic and policy issues,
and developing clean technologies. As in the field of healthcare, prevention
is better than cure.
