The 2020 Vision
In 2000, at the request of the European Commission, a high-level group of industry and research leaders set out to develop a vision for European aeronautics in the year 2020. Their final report, published in 2001, addresses not only technical and industrial questions but also issues of public concern.
Quality and affordability
Aeronautics research is not just about flying higher, faster and farther. Today’s key words include ‘more affordable’, ‘safer’, ‘cleaner’ and ‘quieter’. The following pages include some examples of research being carried out on issues of importance to society as a whole.
Among the issues addressed in the ‘2020 vision’ report were passenger choice, convenience, comfort and affordability. Punctuality and dependability are key issues, but improved in-flight services and cabin comfort are also important components. None of these should mean a prohibitive price tag. Advanced technologies and methods that help to reduce airline operating costs should mean lower travel costs for the citizen.
Technology Application to the Near Term Business Goals and Objectives of the Aerospace Industry
The EU-funded TANGO Technology Platform aims to achieve a step change in aircraft efficiency, improved application of new materials, design methods and manufacturing processes to significantly reduce the weight of aircraft structures. Lower weight will lead to reduced fuel consumption and more competitive operating costs.
