Albania has signed a Memorandum of Understanding allowing it to participate in the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) on an equal footing with all EU Member States. The agreement was signed on 17 December 2007. Read more

Research Commissioner Janez Potočnik visited Chile as part of his first official visit to Latin America. The EU and Chile have an ambitious bilateral relationship with an S&T agreement dating back to 2002. Chile has significantly increased its participation in the 6th Research Framework Programme (FP6) compared to FP5. The Commissioner has met with the President of the Republic, Michele Bachelet, ministers of the economy, transport and communication, deputy minister for education, senior research managers and business people to promote further development of mutually beneficial scientific and technological cooperation. The Commissioner also met with the President of the National Commission for Science and Technology (CONICYT), the major research funding institution in Chile.

Research Commissioner Janez Potočnik visited Brazil as the first leg on his first official visit to Latin America. In Brazil, this follows on the launch of an EU-Brazil Strategic Partnership and the recent entry into force of an EU-Brazil Science and Technology Agreement. In his talks with ministers of research and industry, senior government officials at national and federal state level, researchers, business leaders and other personalities in Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro focused on exploring avenues for increased mutually beneficial research cooperation in several areas. Brazil was the most active country in Latin America participating in research collaborations in the 6th Framework Programme.

The European Union and Israel have agreed to renew their science and technological cooperation, giving Israeli researchers, universities and companies full access to the EU's Seventh Research Framework Programme (FP7).

Switzerland is now eligible to participate fully in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), following the signature of a scientific agreement with the European Union.

Croatia, Serbia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia are now eligible to compete on an equal footing with EU Member States in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), following the signature of Memoranda of Understanding with the European Commission. A similar agreement was also recently signed between Turkey and the Commission. In gaining 'associated status', the signatory countries will now be able to participate in all the FP7 calls for proposals, including those opened since the beginning of the year. The agreement offers researchers form these countries the same rights for participation as EU Member States in all the research cooperation and supported actions funded under FP7.
