The Third Steering Committee meeting of the S&T Cooperation Agreement between the European Communities and Brazil is scheduled in Brasilia with substantial delegations on both sides to assess progress with implementation across a wide range of areas of shared interest.

The EC Delegation in Brazil and the Brazilian Liaison Office with FP7 have published a report on Brazilian participation in the European Research Framework Programme (in Portuguese). The 143 page document provides comprehensive information on who is participating, in which thematic or horizontal areas and contextualises this information with some data on joint publications between European and Brazilian scientists and indicators of the Brazilian S&T landscape and how it relates to Europe. The 2nd EU-Brazil Summit took place today in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The EU was represented by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the President of the Commission José Manuel Durão Barroso. The event was hosted by Brazil's President Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva. The presidents visited an exhibition on European Research. The principal deliverable of the Summit was a Joint Action Plan that sets out the political priorities and actions of the EU-Brazil Strategic Partnership. The Second Steering Committee meeting of the S&T Cooperation Agreement between the European Communities and Brazil has taken place in Brussels, 23.10.2008. It was co-chaired by Brazilian Ambassador, R. Neiva Tavares, Head of the Brazilian delegation and Mr. Jose-Manuel Silva Rodriguez, Director General for the EC's DG Research. The parties updated each other on recent policy developments and assessed very encouraging progress since the first meeting. This included preparations for a coordinated call on second generation biofuel research and exploration of stepping up nuclear cooperation.

The second and revamped edition of the 'Oficina de enlace' Liaison Office with the 7th Research Framework Programme (2007-2013), BBICE (Bureau Brasileiro para Ampliação da Cooperação Internacional com a União Européia) has been launched. The office was relocated for practical reasons from the Centre for Management and Strategic Studies (CGEE) to the University of Brasilia and immediately continued promotional activities of the predecessor.
