With currently 15 participating countries, the Joint Programming Initiative “More Years, Better Lives” aims to enhance the coordination and collaboration between European and national research programmes related to demographic change. In a recent project, it recognised the importance of understanding the employment participation of older workers and commissioned a large group of experts to investigate why some people at higher working age are still working while others are not. Based on a critical review of the existing evidence, the group defined conceptual, regional and thematic research needs, which will inform an upcoming joint call for proposals for interdisciplinary research projects on ageing in the workplace.
