How ESFRI works

In order to ensure the smooth and effective running of the Forum, ESFRI adheres to a set of guidelines which are agreed by the Forum and reviewed (and updated if necessary) every two years.

These procedural guidelines (PDF icon 113 KB) have been set up around the following topics:

  • A non-exhaustive list of activities that the Forum may follow;
  • The mandate of the ESFRI Delegates , the Chair and Executive Board;
  • The modus operandi of Working Groups set up by ESFRI;
  • The role of the ESFRI Secretariat;
  • Operational issues;
  • Information and reporting; and
  • Resources

The Forum is a self-regulated body, operating in an open method of coordination, mainly on the basis of consensus. ESFRI typically meets four times per year. The meetings are held either in Brussels (hosted by the European Commission) or hosted by the country holding the rotating Presidency of the EU. The Forum meetings are for delegates and permanent observers only, with the participation of observers and guests on a case-by-case basis.
