  EU study finds climate change threatens Baltic Sea ecosystem

Photo of article EU-funded researchers have found that the sea surface temperature of the Baltic Sea was warmer in the past and the oxygen depletion was stronger than what current figures show. The INFLOW project, 1 of 16 BONUS+ ('Multilateral call for research projects within the Joint Baltic Sea Research Programme') projects, is developing a model for natural variability in marine ecosystems that will fuel our understanding of how the changes will affect the Baltic Sea in the long run. BONUS+ is jointly funded by national programmes of the Baltic countries to the tune of EUR 22 million, of which EUR 7.27 million is provided via a grant under the ERA-NET Plus scheme of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

  Ageing at the forefront of European research

Photo of article Researchers are helping Europe, and the EU in particular, meet the challenges imposed on the region by an ageing population and declining birth rates. They are also tackling how fragmentation is affecting the impact and efficiency of international and interdisciplinary research efforts. The ERA-AGE 1 and 2 (European Research Area on Ageing 1 and 2) ERA-NETs have made major headway in tackling these issues by consolidating research resources and know-how, and optimising the impact of research on policy, practice and product development. Thanks to ERA-AGE 1 and 2, Europe is providing answers to issues that weigh heavily on the minds of everyone.

  Alzheimer's-linked protein can travel into brain, study shows

Photo of article Researchers have discovered that tissue from outside the brain that contains misfolded beta-amyloid protein can travel and 'infect' the brain. Pathological protein deposits have been strongly linked to the genesis of the neurodegenerative disorder called Alzheimer's disease. The support for the research came from the ERA-NET NEURON (Network of European Funding for Neuroscience Research) project, which backed the MIPROTRAN project involved in the study. ERA-NET NEURON, for its part, received nearly EUR 3 million under the ERA-NET scheme of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). The study was recently published in the journal Science.
