Small, student-built satellites have launched from the International Space Station, marking a crucial milestone for an EU-funded project aimed at unlocking the mysteries of a largely unexplored layer of the Earth's atmosphere. The launch of the network will position Europe as a key player in micro-satellite technology.

The world's most powerful particle collider is soon to become even more powerful: a massive overhaul is expected to increase the luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider by a factor of 10. An EU-funded design study has shaped key innovations that will underpin the new configuration planned for 2026, which include new magnets and transmission lines.

EU-funded project INTERACT has built a network of Arctic research stations, allowing them to coordinate and share resources more efficiently. The network aims to boost the scope and quantity of research on the Arctic, which serves as a bellwether of global changes to climate, biodiversity and land use.

More energy efficient, less polluting, and not too different from current designs: an innovative aircraft concept developed by an EU-funded project could help reduce the environmental impact of aviation. The main aim of the research was to study the practical implementation of distributed propulsion and the implications of using hybrid power architectures, i.e. architectures that combine different power sources such as gas turbines, advanced batteries or fuel cells. The proposed concept involves a propulsor built into the tail of the plane. This component adds thrust by re-accelerating air slowed down by contact with the fuselage.
