EU-funded researchers are using mathematical models to improve water management in Africa. Their aim is to balance the water, energy and food needs of communities in a sustainable way while allowing for economic development.

Clean water is a human right and a major contributor to sustainable development. But large parts of Africa still have very poor access to it. That needs to change and an EU-backed international consortium is working on clean water technology programmes targeting sub-Saharan Africa. Sustainable, locally-adapted solutions to this complex challenge are the key.

As more and more people travel and global warming paves the way for diseases to spread, human health and welfare are no longer the preserve of single countries, regions or even continents. European researchers teamed up with African partners to bridge the gap in biomedical research and biobanking practices between the regions. Its biobank-in-a-box is now ready to be unwrapped.

The mix of urbanisation and rising technology use has increased the stream of e-waste in Africa, for which recycling capacity is limited. Waste management infrastructures are few and far between, public awareness of health issues is limited and environmental precautions rare. A team of European and African researchers is working on a solution.
