Gateway to earth observation of coastal waters

Coastal waters around the world are under threat from land-based pollutants that affect water quality, marine ecosystems and tourism. An EU-funded project is creating an IT-based platform to support applications that use earth observation (EO) to monitor coastal waters.

Gateway to earth observation of coastal waters

Everyone likes a day at the seaside, but many beachgoers will have been concerned by the damage being done by human activities aggravated by poor management of coastal habitats.

The EU-funded CO-RESYF project is building an open, cloud-based, data access and processing platform for monitoring coastal waters. This ‘gateway’ includes automated tools, methods and standards to support research applications using EO data. CO-RESYF is building upon the success of a previous EU-funded project, SENSYF, which developed a system for fully automated data acquisition and processing.

The project’s main aim is to facilitate research community access to EO data and pre-processing tools, toward the future provision of EO-based coastal waters services. The CO-RESYF platform features a collaborative front end which means that even young and/or inexperienced EO researchers can upload their applications, taking full advantage of the scalable resources available in the cloud-based framework. The CO-RESYF platform is also building an expert centre which is continuously being enriched with a knowledge base and support mechanisms to assist researchers at every stage.

CO-RESYF facilities and tools, optimised for distributed processing, include an EO data-access catalogue, discovery and retrieval tools, as well as a number of pre-processing applications and toolboxes for manipulating EO data.

Advanced users have the ability to take full control of the processing chains, with access to the cloud back end. This allows them to further optimise their applications for fast deployment, for big data access and processing.

CO-RESYF capabilities are being supported and demonstrated by a number of early adopters. These are developing new research applications, helping to guide the definition of requirements, and serving as system beta testers.

A competitive call was issued to further demonstrate and promote the use of the CO-RESYF system. The winners now have access not only to the platform itself but also to extensive training material on the system and on key coastal waters research themes.

Ultimately, the CO-RESYF project is serving the coastal environment, the wider maritime economy and all those who will benefit from cleaner and better managed coastal waters.
