Keeping watch on environment from space

While fire-fighters battled the fierce fires which raged across areas of southern Europe, Britain was facing another sort of disaster, massive flood waters. These catastrophic events were all being passively monitored by a distant observer, the ESA's (European Space Agency’s) Envisat satellite. This eye in space has been providing crucial information, critical to the success of emergency response teams all over the world.

European astronomers ready to take the lead in space research

European astronomers are one step closer to revolutionising astronomy and space research following the recent decision to move ahead with the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). The European Southern Observatory (ESO), a European intergovernmental organisation for astronomical research, recently approved a three-year, €57 million study that will lay the groundwork for the world's largest optical/infrared telescope.

Big month for EU aerospace

January was a huge month for the European aeronautics and space sector. The successful landing of Huygens on Saturn's moon Titan shared the limelight with the long-anticipated unveiling of the Airbus 380, a titan-sized aircraft in its own right. Both of these projects were the result of years of cutting-edge research and development by scientists dotted round Europe.

Mixed progress towards gender equality in the EU

Positive news that Europe is producing a growing number of female science and engineering graduates is tempered by a disproportionate take-up in industry, the latest figures show. But the picture varies between the new and ‘old' EU Member States.

Industry could do more to encourage aerospace students, says the president elect of Euroavia, a well-established student association. More contact and support today should pay dividends for Europe tomorrow.

Shining examples of science, Dutch awards jury says

Four Dutch researchers will receive their nation's top prize for scientific achievement, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) recently announced. This year's Spinoza prize-winners work in the fields of chemistry, social sciences, astronomy and geology.

Taking health monitoring to new heights

Mountaineering accidents claim hundreds of lives every year. Some of the most dangerous climbs are in isolated and hard-to-reach regions of the world. With new satellite-based technology, powered by the European Space Agency (ESA), climbers' health can be constantly tracked, even to the top of Mount Everest.
