Companies have been very slow in recruiting more women board directors; but according to an EU report the period between October 2010 and January 2012 has seen the best progress in improving the gender balance on company boards. While figures are still remarkably low, this development signals a turning point and is seen to be linked to the intensified public debate initiated by the European Commission and the European Parliament in their calls for action. They were followed in some Member States by concrete steps to accelerate the pace of change.

Mothers who stroke their newborn infants in the first few weeks of their life could change the effects that stress during gestation has on early-life development, new research from the United Kingdom shows. Increasing maternal depression has been linked with decreasing physiological adaptability and with increasing negative emotionality when mothers do not stroke their babies enough. The study, recently presented in the journal PLOS ONE, could help increase our understanding of this issue and in turn provide better information services for pregnant women and their partners.

A new study has revealed some alarming figures showing that the number of women in engineering, physics and computer science are alarmingly low in the world's leading economies and are on the decline in others. Conducted by experts in international gender, science and technology issues from Women in Global Science & Technology and the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World, and funded by the Elsevier Foundation, the study maps the opportunities and obstacles faced by women in science across Brazil, the EU, India, Indonesia, Korea, South Africa and the United States.

Researchers from Australia and the United Kingdom have discovered that discrimination is alive and kicking in the labour market. Presented in the International Journal of Obesity, the study shows that obese women do not really stand a chance of landing a job when they are up against non-overweight candidates. But that is not all. Obese women are even paid less than their thinner counterparts.

New research shows that implicit stereotypes could influence gender equity in science and mathematics engagement and performance. Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the results showed that more than two thirds of the study's participants connect science with men, not women.

The FEMAGE project evaluated how third country immigrant women cope with obstacles and strengthen their economic and social integration in Europe. The project partners assessed the women's experiences, expectations and living conditions over a two-year period. Their results shed new light on the women's experiences of migration and integration and identify the ageing societies. They also raise awareness about how to fuel the women's economic and social integration, as well as their emancipation. The project was funded by the EU under the Sixth Framework Programme with EUR 973 887.

Scientists may be one step closer to solving the mystery behind endometriosis — what doctors say is a common health problem for women. In their latest study, scientists at the University of Liverpool in the UK have discovered what may be triggering this condition. Their findings were recently published in the journal Human Reproduction.

Many older actresses say they are passed over for younger women.
We believe we live in an age of equality where men and women have an equal chance of success in whatever they choose to do. This is not always reflected though in the world of entertainment where women past the first flush of youth are often regarded as over the hill. The EU has now commissioned a report to discover if women over 40 are getting their fair share of opportunities in the world of television and theatre.

There was a time when people thought that breast cancer affected the lives only of older women. Developments in cancer research have shown that this is not the case. While the risk of breast cancer increases as people get older, this harrowing disease can affect people who are even in their late twenties. Now comes news that while the chances of developing breast cancer are to some degree inherited, chances of survival also run in the family. The latest online journal Breast Cancer Research suggests that if a woman succumbs to breast cancer, her daughters or sisters are over 60% more likely to die within five years if they are also affected by the disease.

The EU has gone to great lengths to reach out to women interested in science careers, however rules and regulations come up short when dealing with ethics committees reviewing research applications, a new study claims. The study, published in the Journal for Medical Ethics, reviewed current practices across Europe and found that not enough is being done to address the gender imbalance among research ethics committees (RECs). In addition to being under-represented in research sanctioning bodies, sex and gender-specific risk-benefit analysis of project findings is not sufficiently considered.
