A new EU strategy for international cooperation in research and innovation was unveiled recently. The EU accounts for just 7 % of the world population, but it is responsible for 24 % of world expenditure on research, 32 % of high-impact publications and 32 % of patent applications. So international cooperation is seen as a vital step forward in homing in on opportunities and further development.

The events help researchers from around the world discover the opportunities available for working in Europe, why Europe is an ideal place for career development and the funding opportunities for scientists. Likewise, they provide a unique insight into what European countries are doing with regards to innovation transfer.

An international team of researchers has clinched a near EUR 11 million grant under the Health Theme of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) to develop a novel stroke treatment. This groundbreaking, phase 3 clinical study is investigating 1 500 volunteer stroke victims with mild hypothermia. Past pilot studies have found that when the brains of stroke victims are cooled within six hours of their attack, damage to the brain can be reduced. The EUROHYP-1 ('European multicentre, randomised, phase 3 clinical trial of hypothermia plus best medical treatment versus best medical treatment alone for acute ischaemic stroke') project partners say this procedure could potentially help thousands of Europeans each year.

People who cook over open fires and dirty cookstoves are at a higher risk of suffering from illnesses than those who do not, new international research shows. Presented in the journal The Lancet, the findings reveal a 33% drop in the number of reported pneumonia cases in children living in homes with smoke-reducing chimneys on the cookstoves.

Lake Victoria, one of the African Great Lakes, is a hotspot for Schistosoma mansoni¸ a major human parasite responsible for schistosomiasis (snail fever) that uses freshwater snails of the genus Biomphalaria as intermediate hosts. Past studies linked some Biomphalaria species with varying parasite compatibility, which impacts local transmission. Lake Victoria, according to experts, is home to two species: B. choanomphala and B. sudanica. But questions remained about the taxonomy of these species. Now researchers from the United Kingdom have discovered that molecular groupings are inconsistent with morphological divisions. The study, published in the journal PLoS ONE, was funded in part by the CONTRAST ('A multidisciplinary alliance to optimise schistosomiasis control and transmission surveillance in sub-Saharan Africa') project. CONTRAST received almost EUR 3 million in funding under the International Cooperation (INCO) Cross-cutting activity of the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6).

Helping drive this effort is the EECALINK ('Promotion and facilitation of international cooperation with EECA') project, which is funded under the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) to the tune of EUR 600 000.

An international team of scientists has discovered that Aboriginal Australians descend directly from an early human expansion into Asia that materialised 70 000 years ago. This occurred at least 24 000 years before the population movements that led to today's Europeans and Asians. The results, published in the journal Science, shed new light on the prehistory of our species and offer a first-time look at the human genome from an Aboriginal Australian.

An international team of researchers partially funded by the EU has uncovered new information linking healthy ageing and neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease. The research was supported in part by the CLIP project ('Mapping functional protein-RNA (ribonucleic acid) interactions to identify new targets for oligonucleotide-based therapy'), which is supported by a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant worth EUR 900 000 under the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The grant runs for 5 years up to 2013. The study is presented in the journal Genome Research.

Have temperature changes forced creatures to evolve in the last 40 years? A new international research study led by The Open University in the United Kingdom investigated this by getting more than 6 000 people in 15 European countries to observe banded snails in open public spaces and in their gardens. The findings, published in the journal PLoS ONE, suggest that other selective agents, such as predation pressure, are responsible for the change, and how this latest information sets a benchmark for future studies of evolutionary change.

Led by the University of Florence in Italy, the researchers collected new samples of rock and sediment from the depths of the Pacific Ocean.
