Deciding when to renovate or replace an ageing bridge can be tricky. Risks to safety must be avoided, but acting prematurely may be wasteful. Monitoring techniques developed by an EU-funded project can facilitate such decisions. They are based on an innovative weigh-in-motion system used to check that trucks aren't overloaded.

New technologies allow emergency services to improve their communications. By using 4G networks and open standards, personnel can share pictures and videos, and talk to other emergency workers, no matter what device they use.

Experts predict that, in the coming years, a higher frequency and intensity of heat waves could lead to an increase of fatalities in the elderly population. To help prevent this, a Marie Curie research fellow, Dr. Andreas D. Flouris, studied and explained the sequence of events leading to heat stroke. His research work was as part of the EU-funded project THERMOMICS.

EU-funded researchers have developed an automated prototype to help farmers monitor and control the amount of water and fertiliser they need for their crops. It has already been successfully tested on 25 hectares of land (an area roughly the size of 35 football pitches), and the SMEs involved are making commercialisation plans - there is currently no such system on the market.

While many of us are used to checking transport schedules on our smartphones, the i-TOUR app, created by EU-funded researchers, goes much further. It advises which form of transport is most appropriate to get from A to B in large urban areas wherever you are in Europe, and takes into account personal preferences, weather and changing circumstances. The i-TOUR team is currently discussing how to take the idea to the market.

The advent of desktop laser printers that can produce three-dimensional (3D) objects is rapidly changing the manufacturing landscape. The next generation of 3D printers is being ushered in by the European Union (EU)-funded project FEMTOPRINT that has invented a compact printer which can generate tiny glass objects three times stronger than steel. Developed by the FEMTOPRINT team, the device is the first that can make 3D objects at both "micro" and "nano" scales.

Counterfeit electronic components are a growing problem for the electronics industry, often resulting in failures, product recalls and serious safety issues. They also cost industry billions of euros each year. The EU-funded ChipCheck project has developed a new inspection system to establish in under a second whether electronic components are legitimate or counterfeit - helping to eliminate costly product recalls and protecting consumers. The result could be commercially available in under a year.

In fields ranging from science and medicine to finance and business, security and defence, it is now commonplace to talk about 'big data' and the challenge of managing such vast quantities of information.
