GEOSS is not just a system of systems, it is also a community of communities - a global ecosystem of groups and entities that provide or use earth observation data. An EU-funded project has smoothed the path for new members joining this growing alliance, notably by developing guidance for future contributors and setting up a stakeholder network.

Around Europe, 50 SMEs, start-ups and web entrepreneurs are receiving EU support as they put the final touches to their prototype apps for smart farming. Around 30 will be selected for further funding, which will be used by the developers to prepare their app for market launch in 2016.

EU-funded researchers have developed a concept for a novel satellite-based navigation network to improve traffic flows and safety along Europe's congested maritime and inland waterways. Through the exchange of vessel data, the network could help reduce accidents and enable European ports to increase efficiency.

EU-funded researchers have developed an automated prototype to help farmers monitor and control the amount of water and fertiliser they need for their crops. It has already been successfully tested on 25 hectares of land (an area roughly the size of 35 football pitches), and the SMEs involved are making commercialisation plans - there is currently no such system on the market.

While many of us are used to checking transport schedules on our smartphones, the i-TOUR app, created by EU-funded researchers, goes much further. It advises which form of transport is most appropriate to get from A to B in large urban areas wherever you are in Europe, and takes into account personal preferences, weather and changing circumstances. The i-TOUR team is currently discussing how to take the idea to the market.

Flight trials have demonstrated technology that gives aircraft fast connectivity to multiple data sources. While passengers get fast internet, pilots and flight computers can access real-time air traffic information and communicate more easily with the ground and other planes. And it is the first research project in Europe to demonstrate a new wireless protocol developed specifically for the air industry.
