Trees in London can give air quality a boost by filtering out pollution particulates, new British research shows. Presented in the November issue of the journal Landscape and Urban Planning, the study is an outcome of the BRIDGE ('Sustainable urban planning decision support accounting for urban metabolism') project, which has clinched EUR 3.1 million under the Environment Theme of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The methodology developed in this study enables scientists to predict the amount of pollution that can be removed in the future, as we face changes in the climate and increased pollution emissions.

EU-funded researchers have taken science out of the lab and onto the streets to stimulate greater engagement in city living. The IPCity ('Integrated project on interaction and presence in urban environments') project partners assembled a range of technologies in real-life settings to allow people to discover new aspects of their city and to voice their opinion on future developments. IPCity was funded EUR 5.27 million under the 'Information society technologies' Thematic area of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6).

Fuel-cell powered manned intercity aircraft are now being developed thanks to the solid support of the EU, which has provided EUR 2.9 million in funding to the Environmentally Friendly Inter-City Aircraft powered by Fuel-Cells (ENFINCA-FC) project. Led by Giulio Romeo, Full Professor of Airplane Design and Aerospace Structures at Turin Polytechnic University, the project is part of the aeronautics and space priority of the Sixth Framework Programme. This project is helping Europeans prove their prowess on the global stage.

EU study investigated anti-social behaviour associated with social exclusion.
Recent events in European cities, such as the violent demonstrations in Parisian suburbs in 2005, have highlighted the role social exclusion can play in inter-group tension and quality of life for some citizens. To gain better insight into the factors contributing to social exclusion, the EU funded URBEX, or the Spatial Dimensions of Urban Social Exclusion and Integration project. While unemployment is generally accepted as a major factor in social isolation issues, URBEX set out to uncover additional causes as well as to carry out a general assessment of the extent and quality of social networks within European urbanised zones.

The EU recently funded a project that will study the processes that cause food to lose its nutritional value as it travels from the farm to the supermarket. The research will be headed by experts from The Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI) in Dundee, and is supported by a grant totalling €3.7 million. Once fruit and vegetables are harvested, the concentration of beneficial nutrients begins to steadily decline, and the recently funded project is aimed at understanding ways to stem that loss.

Ancient Romans showed Europeans how some town planning and technology could banish unsightly, disease-spreading wastewater to the underbelly of major towns. But more than two millennia have past and still some towns in Europe do not have proper wastewater treatment facilities. Finding more efficient, cleaner ways to treat wastewater remains a major goal and one which the EU has invested heavily in through four projects, involving membrane bioreactors (MBR), now clustered together into the MBR-Network.

Coastal mammals, such as birds, are feeling the pressure of overcrowding.
More and more of the world's population is living along the coast. Human development is putting unsustainable pressure on the planet's coastal regions, from lack of fresh water to an inability to process waste. More and better research is needed to understand this problem and many other pressing social issues, suggests ESOF panel experts ahead of the conference next month.

Just over four years ago, the EU-funded EXTERNE project presented the results of a large study proving that the cost of producing electricity from coal and oil would be double what it was if the ‘external' costs, such as environmental damage, were to be included. New research findings and new EU projects bring this concept of external costs closer to EU policy-making, especially in the environment field.

Adding urine to catalytic converters can cut toxic diesel exhaust emissions. The method, developed by researchers in southern Sweden, comes just in time to meet new EU requirements aimed at reducing diesel emissions for trucks and cars.
