Europe will need at least 1 million new research jobs in the near future to meet its ambitions of being one of the most innovative regions of the planet. Therefore, young women and men wanting to become researchers are desperately needed. The European Commission encourages and fosters an understanding of science among young Europeans, and in turn helps them follow related careers. Both the ERA-NET scheme and the Article 185 Initiative are helping drive this objective.

Health practitioners and parents want the best for children, and helping drive this objective is the PRIOMEDCHILD ('Coordination of research on priority medicines for children') initiative, a Coordinated Action funded under the ERA—NET scheme of the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). PRIOMEDCHILD, backed with more than EUR 1.7 million, created a European platform for research, development and innovation of paediatric medicines by funding, coordinating and networking national programmes and researchers across Europe, now launched an EUR 8 million Joint Call.

EU-funded researchers have found that the sea surface temperature of the Baltic Sea was warmer in the past and the oxygen depletion was stronger than what current figures show. The INFLOW project, 1 of 16 BONUS+ ('Multilateral call for research projects within the Joint Baltic Sea Research Programme') projects, is developing a model for natural variability in marine ecosystems that will fuel our understanding of how the changes will affect the Baltic Sea in the long run. BONUS+ is jointly funded by national programmes of the Baltic countries to the tune of EUR 22 million, of which EUR 7.27 million is provided via a grant under the ERA-NET Plus scheme of the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

An EU-wide study has found five new genetic variants for Parkinson's disease. The research was funded in part by the NEURON ('Network of European funding for neuroscience research') initiative, a Coordinated Action funded under the ERA-NET scheme of the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) to the tune of EUR 2.7 million. Participating in NEURON were experts from Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden and the UK. The research was recently published in The Lancet journal.

Species are disappearing at an alarming rate, threatening nature's ability to provide us with essential goods and services like clean air and water, food, fuel, materials, climate regulation and flood prevention, to name just a few. Enter the EU-funded ERA-NET project BIODIVERSA, which is working to create a single biodiversity research community in Europe. BIODIVERSA, which is now in its second phase, has received funding from the EU's Sixth and Seventh Framework Programmes (FP7).

Quebec-based researchers have joined two projects funded under the NEURON ('Network of European funding for neuroscience research') initiative, a Coordinated Action funded under the ERA-NET scheme of the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). The Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec (FRSQ), which signed up to NEURON in 2009, said cooperating with European partners effectively helps the Canadian province gain a stronger foothold in the mental health research field.

Researchers are helping Europe, and the EU in particular, meet the challenges imposed on the region by an ageing population and declining birth rates. They are also tackling how fragmentation is affecting the impact and efficiency of international and interdisciplinary research efforts. The ERA-AGE 1 and 2 (European Research Area on Ageing 1 and 2) ERA-NETs have made major headway in tackling these issues by consolidating research resources and know-how, and optimising the impact of research on policy, practice and product development. Thanks to ERA-AGE 1 and 2, Europe is providing answers to issues that weigh heavily on the minds of everyone.

Metrology refers to the science and application of measurement, and it impacts on our lives in countless ways. Today, Europe's metrologists are working together in the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP), which receives 50% of its funding through the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). Through the EMRP, they are helping to address the grand challenges facing the world today in diverse fields such as the environment, energy and health.

Researchers have discovered that tissue from outside the brain that contains misfolded beta-amyloid protein can travel and 'infect' the brain. Pathological protein deposits have been strongly linked to the genesis of the neurodegenerative disorder called Alzheimer's disease. The support for the research came from the ERA-NET NEURON (Network of European Funding for Neuroscience Research) project, which backed the MIPROTRAN project involved in the study. ERA-NET NEURON, for its part, received nearly EUR 3 million under the ERA-NET scheme of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). The study was recently published in the journal Science.

Two young scientists have received the first ever Excellent Paper in Neuroscience Award, an initiative of the ERA-NET NEURON project (Network for European Funding for Neuroscience Research). NEURON received EUR 2.7 million under the ERA-NET scheme of the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) to better coordinate national research funding programmes and funding activities in Europe in the field of disease-related neurosciences.
