Pre and co normative research for standardisation

Standards are essential for economic growth and social progress. Indeed, an appropriate standard regulation can:

  • facilitate the introduction of new products to markets,
  • enable interoperability between new and existing products, services and processes,
  • enhance protection of users,
  • give consumers confidence in innovations and
  • serve as an alternative route to disseminate research results.

The technical basis of a new standard is usually established through a programme of research. Such research is used to demonstrate the feasibility and reliability of the technique or process to be standardized and to investigate its limitations. Several NMP projects have produced outcomes that have been standardised.
