Outcomes of 23 March 2015 EU-US workshop on bridging nanoEHS research efforts
Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) – based on high-tech components thousands of times smaller than the width of a human hair – are already a bigger part of our lives than most people know. Commodities nanomaterials can be found in cosmetics, sun-block creams and dirt-resistant clothes such as coats or sports shoes and are more complex nanomaterials are used in innovative applications such as catalysts, electronics, solar panels, batteries and biomedical applications including diagnostics and tumour therapies.
The challenge for every new technology, and nanotechnology is no exception, is to appropriately enjoy the benefits of nanotechnology-enabled products and, at the same time deal proactively with the potential risks of these products for human health and the environment. These issues are of global concern and it is essential to leverage resources at the international level and to avoid duplication of research in this field. It is with these objectives that Europe and the USA, who have leadership in this arena, regularly meet.
On March 12-13 the United States and the European Union held their fourth joint workshop on Bridging NanoEHS Research Efforts to further promote and deepen the collaboration on nanotechnology environmental, health, and safety (nanoEHS or nanosafety) research.
