Coal and steel research
For 50 years, the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) provided invaluable leadership and financial support in the area of European steel research. When the ECSC treaty expired on 23 July 2002, a new steel research programme was put in place, following approval by Council in February 2002. This programme is funded independently of the Commission’s research Framework Programmes and focuses on technologies to guarantee the continued economic, clean and safe production of steel and steel products.
- Turning waste into cash - 03/03/2006
By-products generated by the steel and related industries can now be processed and re-used thanks to the AVOID-SOLID project, which has developed a new treatment process yielding an array of valuable commodities. - ESTEP live on CORDIS - 27/02/2006
A wave of Technology Platforms – made up of leading authorities from stakeholder groups – is guiding European research policy-making in diverse fields. One such high-level group is the European Steel Technology Platform (ESTEP,) whose progress can now be followed online via a new web service. - Mass spectrometer has the fingerprint for success - 15/09/2005
Stable Isotope Mass Spectroscopy was originally developed by geologists to analyse naturally occurring stable isotope ratios in a range of rocks and minerals to learn about their origins and relationships. This project has succeeded in adapting the technique to analyse the isotope ratios of elements common in organic materials that were previously very difficult to measure. It has developed an instrument that measures these ratios accurately enough to show the geographical origin of many products. This work has successfully brought a new technique to market and created new businesses that use stable isotope fingerprinting as a powerful tool in many areas of scientific and forensic research. - European Technology Platforms play key role in FP7 preparation - 17/05/2005
European Technology Platforms (ETPs) are playing a key role in the preparations for the EU Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). Some 22 technology platforms have been established to date. The Commission is keen to encourage industrial leadership of these strategic initiatives. - Technology platform offers new dynamism for European steel - 22/03/2004
The European Commission and steelmakers’ federation EUROFER have launched a technology platform boosting research and innovation in the European steel industry to meet global competitiveness and environmental challenges. - Commission to launch new steel technology platform - 09/02/2004
Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin will launch a steel technology platform in March 2004 to meet the strategic ambitions of European industry in 2030. The research agenda has been established with the steel industry and stakeholders. - Assured future for European steel research - 11/11/2002
