Continuum models (PDF version, 2.58MB) assume the matter in the material fills the entire region of space.
The models are approximations to fundamental physics and chemistry laws and conservation equations. Information about the behaviour of a specific material is added via constitutive equations and constraints. The models provide the relations between chemical composition and microstructure and effective material properties. Device and manufacturing process behaviour are also described by continuum models. Together these models allow designing materials with desired properties (materials by design).
