131. Trending science: Big bang makes way for 'world's biggest eye on the sky'

Did you happen to hear a very big bang around 7pm on Thursday 19 June? Well, that was the top of a mountain in Chile being blown clean off to make way for the world's largest telescope - the aptly-named European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). The victim of the decapitation was the 3 000-metre-high Cerro Armazones in the Atacama Desert. The perpetrator was the European Southern Observatory (ESO). 133. EU-industry partnerships seek innovation boost with first €1 billion for projects

Research partnerships between the EU, the private sector and Member States today presented their first calls for projects and partners under Horizon 2020, the EU's €80 billion research and innovation programme. Worth a total of €1.13 billion in public funding, which will be complemented by a comparable amount from the private partners, the first round of funding will go into projects that will improve people's lives as well as boost international competitiveness of Europe's industry. Recent turbulence in Ukraine has led to an even more intensified hunt for secure sources of energy for Europe. Geothermal district heating (GeoDH) is one of the solutions being touted as a valuable and immediate option for the alleviation of Central and Eastern Europe's dependency on Russian gas. While over 25 % of the EU population lives in areas directly suitable for GeoDH, the significant potential of deep geothermal is not yet being fully exploited in Europe. Mr. Gérard Dorey has awarded to the Vigi'Fall on behalf of the jury of the Paris international Concours Lépine the Gold Medal which rewards the most promising inventions of the 2014 edition.
