The Integrated SET Plan fit for new challenges

Brussels, 15 September 2015

The European Commission adopted the new Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan PDF icon. The upgraded SET Plan is the first research and innovation deliverable on which the fifth dimension of the Energy Union will be built.

Building on an integrated approach going beyond technology silos, the upgraded SET Plan proposes ten focused research and innovation actions to accelerate the energy system's transformation and create jobs and growth, ensuring the European Union's leadership in the development and deployment of low-carbon energy technologies. These actions will contribute to achieve the research and innovation objectives of the Energy Union to: become the global leader in renewable energy; facilitate consumer participation and accelerate the progress to a smart energy system; develop and reinforce energy efficient systems; diversify and strengthen options for sustainable transport; drive ambition in carbon capture and storage deployment; and increase safety in the use of nuclear energy.

A more efficient and simple governance structure will be put in place in order to increase coordination and cooperation between national governments, industry and research institutions. It will boost transparency, accountability and monitoring of progress, as well as improve knowledge sharing. The SET Plan will also promote a better articulation of funding sources and greater access to risk-financing to support new innovations and bring novel technologies to market.

The upgraded SET Plan will be in the limelight at the SET Plan Conference taking place on 21-22 September in Luxembourg. European Commissioners Carlos Moedas, responsible for Research, Science and Innovation, and Miguel Arias Cañete, responsible for Climate Action and Energy, will present it to the public.

The SET Plan has been a cornerstone of the EU's energy and climate policy since it was established in 2007. It has triggered substantial investments in low-carbon technologies and has boosted cooperation across the EU among stakeholders in research.
