Coronavirus: EU-funded research project brings new rapid diagnostic to the market
One of the first 18 research and innovation projects funded by the EU to tackle the coronavirus is already delivering results. Researchers involved in the “HG nCoV19 test” project, selected for funding from the EU research and innovation programme Horizon 2020 under the special call launched in January, have obtained approval to put a new rapid point-of-care diagnostic for COVID-19 on the market.

European Innovation Council awards €114 million to 35 cutting-edge technologies and appoints its first programme manager
The European Innovation Council (EIC) Pathfinder Pilot has selected 35 projects set to develop cutting-edge technologies to receive a total of €114 million following the latest round of applications for funding. The funding comes from Horizon 2020, the EU’s research and innovation programme.

Additional €150 million for the European Innovation Council to fund breakthrough ideas tackling coronavirus
The European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator Pilot will work with an extra €150 million to support game-changing innovations to tackle the coronavirus crisis. The additional budget, approved by the European Commission today, will fund the best start-ups and SMEs who applied under the March cut-off.

Three islands receive EU Prize for innovative renewable energy solutions
The Danish island of Bornholm is the first ever winner of the EU RESponsible Island Prize. The Danish island won the title in recognition for its innovative energy solutions and its contribution to a sustainable and climate-friendly Europe, the European Commission announced today. The second prize went to the island of Samsø, also in Denmark, and the third prize to the Orkney Islands in the United Kingdom.

Pan-European Hackathon to develop innovative solutions to overcome societal challenges related to coronavirus
The European Commission and EU member states have today launched a call for participation in a pan-European Hackathon to connect innovators, partners and buyers across Europe to develop innovative solutions to coronavirus. The Hackathon will take place on 24, 25 and 26 April and is structured around categories of problems that need short-term solutions in relation to coronavirus health and life, business continuity, remote working and education, social & political cohesion, digital finance and an open category for other challenges.

EU and Africa step up research cooperation to combat coronavirus outbreak
The European Union is stepping up its research and innovation cooperation with Africa in order to combat the coronavirus outbreak. The European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) is launching calls for expressions of interest to support research on the coronavirus and strengthen research capacities in sub-Saharan Africa. Three calls in total will be funded with up to €28 million from Horizon 2020, the EU research and innovation programme.

Emergency coronavirus research: Commission selects 18th project to develop rapid diagnostics
The European Commission has decided to fund another project as part of its emergency call for urgently needed research and innovation into the coronavirus. This means it will support 18 projects with a total of €48.5 million from Horizon 2020, the EU research and innovation programme.

European Innovation Council pilot: €344 million to 107 visionary ideas of start-ups, SMEs and researchers
The European Commission announces today the latest results of the European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot. Over 100 game-changing ideas from across Europe are on track to receive EIC support totalling €344 million. Funded by Horizon 2020, the EU’s research and innovation programme, the selected proposals include the Radical project, which is revolutionising local and global air quality monitoring, and FluoGuide, a visualisation technology that vastly improves surgical precision during cancer-removal surgery.

COVID-19: Horizon 2020 partly funding Innovative Medicines Initiative fast track call
The European Commission funds through Horizon 2020, the EU research and innovation programme, up to €45 million of the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) fast track call for research proposals in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. A commitment of a similar scale is expected from the pharmaceutical industry so that the total investment could reach up to €90 million.
