Horizon 2020 found to be meeting its objectives, but is underfunded
A new assessment of the first years of Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation programme, shows that it is on track to help create jobs and growth, tackle our biggest societal challenges and improve people's lives. Horizon 2020 has clear European added value by producing demonstrable benefits compared to national or regional-level support, but it has been so successful in attracting the best researchers and innovators that it could have spent four times its budget in support of excellent projects.

EU-backed major research facility promotes peace in the Middle East
Strongly supported by EU funding, the SESAME synchrotron, the first major international research infrastructure in the Middle East, started operating today in Allan, Jordan. Carlos Moedas, Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, attended today's inauguration event alongside His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan and over 300 policy makers, scientists and diplomats from the region, the EU and beyond.

Following the request of Vytenis Andriukaitis, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, the scientific advisers provide a detailed scientific description of the full spectrum of agricultural breeding techniques used in plants, animals and microorganisms.

Urban Water Atlas for Europe – a 360° view of water management in cities
The European Commission published today the Urban Water Atlas for Europe. The publication – the first of its kind – shows how different water management choices, as well as other factors such as waste management, climate change and even our food preferences, affect the long-term sustainability of water use in our cities.

European Commission addresses barriers to innovation: the first Innovation Deal focuses on water reuse
Today, the European Commission, together with 14 partners from national and regional authorities, universities, knowledge centres, innovators and end-users, takes concrete steps to address regulatory barriers to innovation by signing the first Innovation Deal on 'Sustainable Waste Water Treatment Combining Anaerobic Membrane Technology (AnMbR) and Water Reuse'.

184 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from 28 countries have been selected for funding in the latest round of the Horizon 2020 SME Instrument.

Horizon 2020 to be topped up with €200 million
The European Parliament gave today its consent to additional €200 million for Horizon 2020, the current EU research and innovation funding programme, by adopting a compromise on the mid-term review of the EU budget, reached with the EU Member States on 7 March. The final and formal approval of the Council of the EU is expected in the coming weeks.

Commission fosters research and innovation dialogue with the 10 Western Mediterranean countries from the EU and North Africa
Carlos Moedas, Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, joined today in Tunisia the Forum for the Dialogue in the Western Mediterranean, referred to as the "5+5 Dialogue". With ministers and high level ministerial representatives responsible for research and higher education from the countries participating to this sub-regional forum (Algeria, France, Italy, Libya, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Portugal, Spain and Tunisia), as well as the Secretaries General of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), they discussed ways of deepening cooperation in research and innovation.

Commission appoints new advisory group on ethics in science and new technologies
The European Commission has today officially re-launched the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE) by appointing 15 high-calibre members. The Group will advise the Commission on all areas of policy where ethical, societal and fundamental rights issues intersect with the development of science and new technologies.

Commission welcomes new European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity
The European Commission has received today the new European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity aimed at promoting the responsible conduct of research to help improve its quality and reliability. This new Code was developed by national academies of sciences and humanities through their umbrella organisation, the All European Academies (ALLEA) federation, in close cooperation with the EC.


Commission's top scientific advisers publish opinion on Cybersecurity in the Digital Single Market
The High Level Group of the Commission's Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) has published a new independent scientific opinion on cybersecurity in the Digital Single Market. At the request of the Commission Vice-President Andrus Ansip, the scientific advisers make a number of recommendations to make it easier and safer for people and businesses to operate online in the EU.

Carlos Moedas, EU Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, today launched the third edition of the European Capital of Innovation prize. This contest will reward the European city that is building the best 'innovation ecosystem', connecting citizens, public organisations, academia, and business.

New European 'Big Data' e-infrastructure to support biodiversity research
The European Commission today granted the legal status of European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) to the e-Science and Technology European Infrastructure for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research (LifeWatch). With this measure, the EU provides the facility with many administrative advantages enjoyed by international organisations and therefore helps to successfully implement the infrastructure project.

Public investment in research and innovation more important than ever, new study confirms
Public funding of research and innovation (R&I) acts as a catalyst to boost private R&I activities and overall economic growth, according to a report released today by the European Commission. The study, which reviews existing empirical literature, underlines that the role of public R&I funding is especially important in light of today's rapidly changing and riskier innovation landscape.

Latest results: Commission to invest almost €104 million in 71 innovative companies under Horizon 2020 SME Instrument
71 small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) from 22 countries have been selected for funding in the latest round of the Horizon 2020 SME Instrument Phase 2. The total amount to be distributed between the SMEs working on 66 projects is €103.82 million. In this phase of the instrument, each project will receive up to €2.5 million (€5 million for health projects) to finance innovation activities.
