Switzerland steps up research and innovation cooperation with the EU
Swiss researchers and organisations will now be able to fully participate in Horizon 2020, the European Union's research and innovation funding programme, on equal terms with entities from EU Member States and other associated countries. This is because on 1 January 2017, Switzerland will become fully associated to Horizon 2020. Until now, Switzerland has only been associated to parts of the programme.

184 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from 28 countries have been selected for funding in the latest round of the Horizon2020 SME Instrument.

Commission presents experts' recommendations on research and innovation in Ukraine
The European Commission has presented in Kyiv today policy recommendations to help Ukraine to improve its performance in research and innovation. The recommendations were developed, at the request of Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science, by a team of high-level experts and officials from eight different EU Member States.

Latest results: Commission to invest €80 million in 58 innovative companies under the Horizon 2020 SME Instrument
58 small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) from 16 countries have been selected for funding in the latest round of the Horizon2020 SME Instrument Phase 2. In this phase of the instrument, each project will receive up to €2.5 million (€5 million for health projects) to finance innovation activities. The total amount to be distributed between the SMEs working on 51 projects is €80 million.

EU companies' R&D investment grows faster than global and US trends
The 2016 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard, published today by the European Commission, shows that EU companies invested €188.3bn in Research & Development (R&D) in the fiscal year 2015/2016. This constitutes an annual increase of 7.5% which puts EU companies ahead of the global (6.6%) and US (5.9%) trends.

The European Commission is today proposing new wide-reaching measures to accelerate Europe's transition to a competitive low-carbon economy by improving the regulatory and business environment and boosting investment in clean-energy research and innovation (R&I).

Commission announces members of group to produce vision for future EU research and innovation and boosting its impact
The European Commission has announced the 12 members of the new High Level Group that will formulate a vision for future EU research and innovation and make recommendations on maximising the impact of EU investments in this area. The group is chaired by Pascal Lamy, President Emeritus of the Jacques Delors Institute.


InnovFin provides €100 million to construct a European research centre to push the boundaries of physics
The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden today signed an EU-backed loan agreement worth 985 million Swedish kronas(€100 million). The EIB joined forces with both the Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) and Svensk Exportkredit (SEK) who provided €100 million each, for a total of €300 million in financing in support of the ESS.

EU funding for research and innovation attracts ever more interest, report shows
Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation programme, is attracting more and more researchers and innovators. In 2015 there was an increase in proposals by 25% compared to 2014, especially coming from businesses, whose number of applications increased by almost 27%. Almost 50 % of participants are newcomers, many of which are small and medium-sized companies.

New actions to help close the gap in research excellence across Europe
The European Commission is today presenting new measures that will help bring more countries to the map of research excellence. The actions range from financing new knowledge centres to facilitating structural reforms that will enable more synergies between different funding sources. They will be rolled out during the last three years of Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation funding programme that runs until 2020.

The European Investment Bank today announced a €10 million loan agreement with Spanish-based Adamo Telecom Iberia, a subsidiary of the Swedish parent company Bredband Adamo.

European Union invests €45 million into research to combat the Zika disease
The European Union, through the Horizon 2020 programme, is investing €45 million in research to combat the outbreak of the Zika virus disease and other emerging infections transmitted by mosquitoes. The significant funding from the EU's research and innovation programme will support research on treatments, diagnostics and vaccines, as well as better risk assessment for Zika.

Public consultation: have your say on Horizon 2020
The European Commission has today launched a public stakeholder consultation which will feed into the interim evaluation of Horizon 2020, the EU's €77 billion research and innovation funding scheme running from 2014 to 2020. This interim evaluation will help improve the functioning of Horizon 2020, and will also be an important element in preparations of a next EU research and innovation programme.

Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2016 goes to EU-funded researchers developing world's smallest machines
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2016 has been awarded jointly to Jean-Pierre Sauvage, Sir J. Fraser Stoddart and Bernard L. Feringa for the design of the world's smallest - molecular - machines. All three laureates have participated in EU-funded research projects, and Bernard L. Feringa is also a recipient of two prestigious European Research Council (ERC) grants.
