Commission welcomes new European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity
The European Commission has received today the new European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity aimed at promoting the responsible conduct of research to help improve its quality and reliability. This new Code was developed by national academies of sciences and humanities through their umbrella organisation, the All European Academies (ALLEA) federation, in close cooperation with the EC.


Commission's top scientific advisers publish opinion on Cybersecurity in the Digital Single Market
The High Level Group of the Commission's Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) has published a new independent scientific opinion on cybersecurity in the Digital Single Market. At the request of the Commission Vice-President Andrus Ansip, the scientific advisers make a number of recommendations to make it easier and safer for people and businesses to operate online in the EU.

Commission launches the 2017 European Capital of Innovation contest
Carlos Moedas, EU Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, today launched the third edition of the European Capital of Innovation prize. This contest will reward the European city that is building the best 'innovation ecosystem', connecting citizens, public organisations, academia, and business.

New European 'Big Data' e-infrastructure to support biodiversity research
The European Commission today granted the legal status of European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) to the e-Science and Technology European Infrastructure for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research (LifeWatch). With this measure, the EU provides the facility with many administrative advantages enjoyed by international organisations and therefore helps to successfully implement the infrastructure project.

Public investment in research and innovation more important than ever, new study confirms
Public funding of research and innovation (R&I) acts as a catalyst to boost private R&I activities and overall economic growth, according to a report released today by the European Commission. The study, which reviews existing empirical literature, underlines that the role of public R&I funding is especially important in light of today's rapidly changing and riskier innovation landscape.

Latest results: Commission to invest almost €104 million in 71 innovative companies under Horizon 2020 SME Instrument
71 small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) from 22 countries have been selected for funding in the latest round of the Horizon 2020 SME Instrument Phase 2. The total amount to be distributed between the SMEs working on 66 projects is €103.82 million. In this phase of the instrument, each project will receive up to €2.5 million (€5 million for health projects) to finance innovation activities.

At an award ceremony in Brussels on International Women's Day, Commissioner Carlos Moedas and Vice-President of the European Parliament Mairead McGuinness announced the four winners of the 2017 Horizon 2020-funded EU Prize for Women Innovators.

ERC Week to mark the 10th anniversary of the European Research Council
To mark its 10th anniversary, the European Research Council (ERC) is organising an "ERC week" on 13 - 19 March that will see more than 100 events taking place across Europe and beyond to promote the ERC's successful decade in funding some of the most top-class global research.

Commission simplifies Horizon 2020
The European Commission will further simplify participation in Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation programme. New funding rules will reduce administrative costs to participants and help prevent accounting errors.

Commission improves funding conditions for EU-funded researchers
Researchers working on EU-funded research and innovation projects will receive at least as much salary as they would get if they were working on national projects, and will be eligible for an additional bonus of up to €8000 per year.

Commission and EIF start selecting Pan-European Venture Capital Fund-of-Funds promoters
The European Commission and the European Investment Fund (EIF) have started selecting promoters of one or more private-sector led, market-driven Pan-European Venture Capital Funds-of-Funds. 17 applications were submitted by the 31 January 2017 deadline.

Commission speeds up access to market of 17 innovative projects with €33.5 million
The European Commission is awarding nearly €33.5 million to bring more innovative ideas to market quicker. The 17 benefitting projects, involving 80 partners in 19 countries, will receive around €2 million each under the sixth and last round of the€200 million Fast Track to Innovation (FTI) pilot scheme run since January 2015 under the EU's research and innovation programme Horizon 2020.

New members appointed to High Level Group of the Commission's Scientific Advice Mechanism
The High Level Group of the Commission's Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) welcomes two new world-class scientists. Sir Paul Nurse, Director of the Francis Crick Institute and 2001 Nobel Prize Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, becomes a member of the Group with effect from 1 March. The Group was also joined in November 2016 by Carina H. Keskitalo, Professor of Political Science at the Department of Geography and Economic History at Umeå University, when Dame Julia Slingo retired from the Group.

Meet the 12 finalists of the EU Prize for Women Innovators 2017
The finalists of the Horizon 2020-funded EU Prize for Women Innovators 2017 are announced today by the European Commission. The shortlist contains twelve outstanding women entrepreneurs who have brought their breakthrough ideas to the market. For the first time, this year's contest includes three finalists in a new category, the Rising Innovator, to recognise excellence in female entrepreneurs aged 30 years or under. All of the finalists have founded or co-founded a successful company based on their innovative ideas.

Commission brings in top innovators to advise on a potential European Innovation Council
The European Commission has announced the 15 members of the new High Level Group that will advise the Commission on how to strengthen support for breakthrough, market-creating innovation in Horizon 2020 and future research and innovation programmes. In this area Europe lags significantly behind its competitors, as reflected in the limited number European startups that have scaled up to become global leaders in new innovation markets.
