Climate change adaptation & mitigation: key messages from IPCC’s 5th Assessment Report and implications for policy and decision making

6 May 2014, Brussels

The European Commission (Directorate-General for Research & Innovation) is organising this half day event (14:00 - 17:00) which brings together policy makers, key stakeholders from the private sector, civil society representatives, scientists, advisors and high level representatives from the IPCC in order to present the key findings of the IPCC 5th Assessment Report (AR5) on climate change adaptation and mitigation, discuss their implications for policy making and for economic and societal sectors, while identifying challenges and opportunities for the future.

The Commissioner for Research and Innovation, Ms Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, will open the event. High level representatives from the IPCC will provide key note speeches and present the key messages from the AR5 WG II* and WG III** Reports. The opening session will be followed by a Panel discussion. The Panel will include the Commissioner for Climate Action, Ms Connie Hedegaard, the Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Ms Kristalina Georgieva, representatives of the business sector and experts from international organisations.

Adaptation Futures 2014 - Third International Climate Change Adaptation Conference

12-16 May 2014, Fortaleza, Brazil

The Third International Climate Change Adaptation Conference 2014 (Adaptation Futures 2014) will be the link between the research community and the users of climate change adaptation information at regional and global scale.

The conference will focus on climate impacts and adaptation options. It will bring together scientists and decision makers, and practitioners from developed and developing countries to share research approaches, methods and results. It will explore the way forward in a world where impacts are increasingly observable and adaptation actions are increasingly required.

The conference will be held at the facilities of the new Centro de Eventos do Ceará, in the City of Fortaleza, State of Ceará, Brazil.

5th AEBIOM European Bioenergy Conference 2014

12-14 May 2014, Brussels, Belgium

The AEBIOM European Bioenergy Conference organized by the European Biomass Association is the fifth edition of the growing series. The annual conference has grown ever since its first edition in 2010 and has quickly become Europe´s major occasion for discussion and networking amongst important industry leaders and policy makers. Bioenergy is the largest renewable energy source in Europe and we expect around 300 industry representatives to be present at this event which is one of the leading bioenergy conferences in Europe. The 5th edition will be co-organized with the European Pellet Council (EPC), the Industrial European Pellet Suppliers (EIPS) and the International Biomass Torrefaction Council (IBTC).

11th Annual International Conference of Young Scientist on Energy Issues - CYSENI 2014

29-30 May 2014, Kaunas, Lithuania

The Local Organizing Committee is pleased to invite Ph. D. students, postdocs, master students and all other young scientists doing research on energy issues to participate in the 11th Annual International Conference of Young Scientist on Energy Issues - CYSENI 2014.

The Conference aims to: • provide an opportunity to present up-to-date research results and to familiarise with colleagues’ research; • provide an opportunity to make contacts with colleagues from Lithuanian and foreign scientific research institutions; • provide an opportunity to get reviews (prepared by senior researchers) on the submitted paper; • provide an opportunity to review papers of other Conference participants; • develope skills of young scientists in presenting their own ideas and research results, discuss various scientific topics.

The Conference topics: • Hydrogen and fuel cells • Renewable energy sources • Smart energy networks • Energy efficiency and reliability • Knowledge for energy policy making • Investigations in the fields of thermal physics, fluid mechanics and metrology • Material sciences and technology • Investigations of combustion and plasma processes • Global change and ecosystems • Fusion energy • Nuclear fission and radiation protection • Cross-cutting energy issues.

 Important deadlines: • January 6, 2014 - registration and abstracts submission; • January 20, 2014 - author notification on abstract acceptance; • March 3, 2014 - draft paper submission; • Papers have to be prepared according to the instructions; • April 1, 2014 - authors will be provided with the reviews; • April 21, 2014 - final paper submission; • May 12, 2014 - announcement of the Conference program; • May 19, 2014 - submission of the presentation in MS Power Point; • May 29 - 30, 2014 - Conference event.

First conference The Ocean of Tomorrow projects: what results so far?

26 March 2014, Brussels

On 26th March 2014, the Directorate General for Research and Innovation is organising the conference The Ocean of Tomorrow projects: what results so far?

This first conference will present early results of four ambitious and multi-disciplinary projects with a focus on understanding, mitigating and adapting to changes in the marine environment. Two projects dealing with the sustainable exploitation of marine biodiversity will also be showcased.

The event will include a panel discussion with high-level experts to take stock and to put forward their views concerning how marine and maritime research could be developed under Horizon 2020.

Greener Aviation: Clean Sky breakthroughs and worldwide status

12-14 March 2014, Brussels, Belgium

The purpose of the conference "Greener Air" is to display and discuss Clean Sky achievements with experts in all disciplines. In parallel, other worldwide programmes focusing on environment and fuel savings will be presented. The programme will comprise plenary as well as technical sessions.

Important: Deadline for contributing Abstracts is set to 30 October 2013.

Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)

13-17 February 2014, Chicago

The AAAS annual meeting is among the world's largest and most prestigious general scientific event, gathering thousands of international scientists, policy makers and science journalists. The programme typically includes keynote speeches, scientific symposia, an exhibition, and press briefings on recent scientific discoveries.

This year's event focuses on "Meeting Global Challenges: Discovery and Innovation", and the European Commission is organising a number of scientific symposia each highlighting different aspects of impact of EU-funded research and innovation.

The Commission's Deputy Director-General for Research & Innovation, Rudolf Strohmeier, will hold a press briefing on 'Destination Europe: research funding opportunities across the Atlantic', and will participate in three scientific symposia. The Commission will also have a booth at the exhibition where conference participants can find out about career and funding opportunities in the EU.
