The UK Government's Innovation Strategy is due to be released alongside the 2014 Autumn Statement. This timely conference will bring together key policymakers with stakeholders central to the strategy's implementation to discuss the likely impact of the proposals and the challenges for putting policy into practice.
At this early stage we expect topics for discussion to focus on priorities for public spending on science, efforts to boost private investment in R&D and further steps Government can take to support business and university collaboration to increase the commercialisation of UK research. Sessions will also include discussion on the the impact that Government's focus on 'eight great technologies' has had so far and the next steps for developing these technologies in the UK.

New ways of delivering HE - MOOCs and technology-enhanced learning
21 October 2014, London
This conference looks at the future for Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs) - and the increased use of technology-enhanced learning more widely in Higher Education. It comes as government pushes for the UK to become a world leader in online learning and also follows a Higher Education Academy review of flexible pedagogies, with the technology-enhanced learning strand published in January.
Sessions will focus on the development of MOOCs, including their potential for online learning and Transnational Education, as well as concerns around implementation and accreditation of modules and the possible threat they pose to traditional teaching. Other key themes are likely to include outcomes and recommendations from FutureLearn's BETA pilot courses running currently. Delegates will also discuss ways in which Higher Education is currently taught and the increased influence technology is having on this, for example the greater use of blended and e-learning. We are delighted that Dr Alison Le Cornu, Academic Lead, Flexible Learning, Higher Education Academy and Stephen Haggard, Author, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills Research Paper, The Maturing of the MOOC and Independent Consultant, Online Learning have agreed to deliver keynote addresses at this seminar, together with a senior speaker confirmed from HEFCE.
