Innovation in waste management: Linking the ‘circular economy’ and the ‘waste hierarchy'
26 November 2014, Espoo, Finland
The workshop addresses the macro environmental effects of the diffusion of non-landfill waste management technologies for MSW by adopting an LCA approach. During the session, the participants will explore possible changing pressures from shifting to non-landfill MSW management technologies.
The presentations will explore observed ex post trends (1996-2011) and on ex ante scenarios (2012-2030 and beyond). The experts and guests are invited to discuss policy and economic implications of (saved) external costs from shifting to non-landfill MSW management technologies.

Bringing R&I excellence to the limelight in EU13 countries
29 October 2014, Brussels
The MIRRIS policy workshop at DG RTD discussed new knowledge on obstacles hindering the participation of EU13 countries in the European Research Area and recommendations on how to overcome them. New data from MIRRIS highlight the decreasing share of post-2004 Member States in European R&I funding from FP6 to the end of FP7 research programmes. An unhealthy competition between structural funds and EU research programmes has been revealed during stakeholder consultations in all concerned Member States. The first set of MIRRIS recommendations and best practices were presented at the workshop. Most of them could be put in place at no or very low cost creating an enabling environment for excellent research and innovation in EU 13 countries and mutually reinforcing rather than competing relation between ESIF funds and Horizon2020.
