Innovation in waste management: Linking the ‘circular economy’ and the ‘waste hierarchy'
26 November 2014, Espoo, Finland
The workshop addresses the macro environmental effects of the diffusion of non-landfill waste management technologies for MSW by adopting an LCA approach. During the session, the participants will explore possible changing pressures from shifting to non-landfill MSW management technologies.
The presentations will explore observed ex post trends (1996-2011) and on ex ante scenarios (2012-2030 and beyond). The experts and guests are invited to discuss policy and economic implications of (saved) external costs from shifting to non-landfill MSW management technologies.

Bio-based Plastics – How do we Grow the EU Industry?
1 December 2014, Brussels
This workshop aims to identify workable solutions to the major hurdles hampering the development of the bio-based plastics sector in the EU. We are especially interested in PLA and PHA as we consider these bio-based plastics as having the highest potential for deployment in the EU. Input from market, policy and technological experts within the area of bioplastics is crucial to allow us to develop recommendations which best answer the needs of industry.
Today, bio-based plastics have an established market, demonstrating rapid growth both in Europe and globally. While Europe is currently the largest producer and user of bio-based plastics, this situation is expected to change in the future with production increasingly being based in countries where feedstocks are cheaper and where production costs are lower. Even with increasing fossil fuel prices expected to make bio-based plastics more competitive compared to fossil-derived plastics, ensuring the cost-competitiveness of EU bio-based plastics production compared to other regions globally is expected to become an increasingly difficult challenge.

FP7 project COEURE opening conference
24 September 2014, Brussels
On September 24, the COEURE Coordination Action will hold its Opening Conference in Brussels at Diamant Conference Center.
The COoperation on EUropean Research in Economics Coordination Action is intended to bring together the key stakeholders in the European economic research space – scientists, users of research in the policy community or the private sector, and funders of research – in a process of stocktaking, consultation and evaluation in order to propose an Agenda for Research Funding for Economics in Europe. COEURE is financed under the 7th Framework Programme.
