Gender Medicine: Harnessing the Power of Sex and Gender Analysis for Research and Innovation

21 November 2014, Maastricht, The Netherlands

Gender Medicine is an emerging novel and highly promising field in health research and biomedicine. It considers specifically the target groups of women and men for disease manifestation and treatment options, following the conviction that targeted approaches will help to optimise treatment strategies for both.

It should not be mistaken for women’s health. Gender Medicine provides increasing evidence on differences between women and men in pathophysiology and in the manifestation and response to treatment of many frequent diseases. The Department of Health, Ethics and Society (HES) organises a conference on Gender Medicine to assess the state-of-the-art of Gender Medicine at Maastricht University and to look ahead to future challenges. The conference will also mark the farewell of Ineke Klinge to Maastricht University. Appointed at the European Commission as chair of the Horizon 2020 Advisory Group on Gender, she will continue to be engaged in this promising research field through international committees and advisory boards.

Attendance is free but registration is obligatory. Please register by sending an e-mail to a.heijnen@maastrichtuniversity.nl.

2 years of NOPOOR research: Enhancing Knowledge for Renewed Policies against Poverty

20 November 2014, Brussels

The NOPOOR project will be evaluated at mid-term by the European Commission (DG RTD) on 20th November 2014. The Consortium will have to emphasise the extent to which the work done tends towards achieving the objectives written in the DoW (description of work). With this occasion, several scientific programmes will be presented to the audience, in order to expose the current state of the research.

The NOPOOR project addresses poverty through new lens and multiple angles. Seven main topics discuss the multidimensionality of poverty: concepts and measurement, international aid, impact of globalisation, labour market and informal sector, education and social policies, role of the state and scenarios for the future. After more than two years, the first results are now being released, mostly represented by study cases. Some of the studies have been presented during the Dakar policy seminar in June 2014 which involved several West African policy makers. Furthermore, individual papers were presented during various seminars and were also submitted to international journals.
