High-level conference "A Joint European and African Research & Innovation Agenda on Waste Management – Economic Opportunities on Turning Waste into a Resource"
25 November 2013, Brussels
On 25th November EC DG Research and Innovation will welcome in Brussels to a high level conference stakeholders from the policy, business and research community from 30 different countries – of which 16 coming from Africa – to discuss “Economic Opportunities on Turning Waste into a Resource”.
The conference wants to stimulate networking, sharing of knowledge and best-practice experiences to successfully address the common challenges of waste management and recovery of raw materials and define a joint agenda.
Waste management and recovery of raw materials are more and more of a top priority for decision makers from all continents. This is particularly true for Africa, where urgent and eco-innovative solutions are needed to cope with the waste generated by a population which is expected to double by 2050. At the same time, African countries can also showcase some success stories providing very useful insights to effectively tackle the waste issue but within and outside the continent. Once these success stories from Africa are combined with the best practice examples from Europe, a new win-win landscape for both sides is created.
The conference will end with a final declaration highlighting the opportunity for Africa-EU cooperation on a common innovation agenda on waste management and recovery of raw materials.
