European Steel: The Wind of Change, Brussels Seminar

31 January 2018, Brussels

More than 100 high-level stakeholders and decision-makers discussed the questions of Steel in Europe at a seminar organised by the European Commission, Directorate General for Research & Innovation, on 31 January 2018 in Brussels.

After a political introduction by representatives from the European Parliament and the European Commission, the seminar shed light on the opportunities offered by RFCS, the Research Fund for Coal and Steel, Horizon 2020 and the Innovation Fund. With the insights from industrial and research stakeholders, the seminar focused on ‘Energy in future steelmaking’ and ‘Steel in the energy market applications’. It was concluded by a session making the synthesis on the different technological paths towards cleaner, more efficient and competitive European steelmaking. These proposals were discussed by a roundtable of European and national policy-makers that addressed issues related to industrial policy, R&I and the EU multi-annual financial perspectives.

The seminar provided a good opportunity to explore the potential for an ambitious European joint initiative on ‘Greening European steel’ with the participation of Commission representatives from DG RTD, DG CLIMA, DG ENER and DG GROW.

The conclusions of this Seminar will feed the Industry Days of 22 and 23 February 2018.

A ‘Steel and Society’ action highlighted the questions of skills needed in the steel sector.
