Smart specialisation is a key concept for research and innovation policy. The concept still needs better illustration through success stories in the field and can benefit from a large exchange of experience. The objective of the workshop is to highlight, through good examples, how research and innovation can strongly contribute to successful smart specialisation from a regional perspective, on the basis of a specific field.
The recently adopted Atlantic integrated macro-regional strategy is a major opportunity for a ‘maritime smart specialisation’ process at regional level. It is of high political relevance in the context of the debate on support to be given to future ‘macro-regions’ as of 2014. It would enlarge the involvement of maritime regions beyond the well-known ‘Baltic Sea Strategy’.
