European Month of the Brain

1-31 May 2013, Across Europe

Understanding the human brain and its diseases is one of the greatest scientific and philosophical challenges. During the last few decades, brain research has made great progress on all fronts but much more is still to be discovered.

Advances in neuroscience are crucial to keep our ageing societies and our economy healthy. Some 165 million Europeans are likely to experience some form of brain disorder each year – from anxiety to depression to dementia – and treating these disorders now costs some €800 billion in Europe every year.

The European Month of the Brain is packed with activities to make a difference. There are more than 50 events in 19 countries:

  • to increase our awareness of the importance of brain research and healthcare matters
  • to showcase EU achievements
  • to outline foresight research and policy
  • to improve the resource allocation for brain research and healthcare within and between EU member states and associated countries
  • to lift taboos around mental health

Atlantic Forum Workshop

4-5 March 2013, Cork, Ireland

The European Commission has been organizing workshops with the Atlantic Member States to ensure awareness of the Atlantic Forum and EU funding processes. The objective of this is to support the Atlantic Action Plan and to assist stakeholders in coming forward with well-prepared projects.

So far four workshops have been held: Horta (Azores), Brest (France), Bilbao (Spain) and, last month, Cardiff (UK). The next workshop will be held in Cork (Ireland) on 4-5 March 2013 with 'Research and Innovation, Atlantic Ports and the Atlantic Action Plan' being the main themes.

The session on 4 March will show how research and innovation is driving the Atlantic Strategy. Furthermore, following feedback from previous workshops, there will also be a half-day parallel session on Atlantic Ports. On 5 March, there will be an opportunity to discuss the draft Atlantic Action Plan along with the key issues of funding and implementation.

The success of the Cork workshop will be dependent on a broad and wide participation coming from across all Atlantic Member States. All interested stakeholders are therefore encouraged to participate.
