However across Europe there is still marked variation in the care that patients receive. The European Union has funded a four-year ERA-NET programme under FP6 on Coordination of Cancer Clinical Practice Guidelines in Europe (CoCanCPG) to allow collaboration across different countries. To share our findings and promote the network, CoCanCPG consortium is holding a symposium in Paris on Tuesday November 24th 2009. |

12 November 2009, Brussels The Implementing Geological Disposal Technology Platform (IGD-TP) will be a scientific and technical forum to provide the necessary focus in the lead up to the operation of geological repositories for high-level nuclear waste in Europe, particularly in those Member States with the most advanced national programmes. These will not only be the first such facilities in Europe but also the first in the world. I am convinced that through this initiative, safe and responsible practices for the long-term management of hazardous radioactive waste can be disseminated to other Member States and even 3rd countries, thereby ensuring the greatest possible protection of all citizens and the environment both now and in the future. |

2007
The Conference will be divided into four main sessions: Trends and Outlook in World Economics, Culture and Food; Drivers of Food demand and of the Market Today and Tomorrow; New Technologies for Food Production; Future Perceptions of Food. Commissioner Potočnik for Science and Research and Commissioner Fischer-Boel for Agriculture and Rural Development will participate in the debate.
On 7 March 2007 German Chancellor Merkel, Commission President Barroso, Commissioner Potocnik and German Federal Minister Schavan will celebrate the launch of FP7, together with 500 scientific and political invitees. The event takes place on the eve of the 2007 European Spring Council. This is no coincidence. Research's central role in creating and maintaining a competitive and sustainable Europe is undisputed. This is a strong signal about the importance the EU puts on research and this is why the event is organised in conjunction with the traditional " Lisbon" European Council.
At the same time, two exhibitions will be open to the public free of charge:

2006
The aim of the event is to address future trends and needs in key technologies and research in the area of waste water treatment. It will focus on the dissemination of knowledge, technology uptake in traditional SME sectors as well as business opportunities.
The aim of the event is to address future trends and needs in key technologies and research in the area of fish farming. It will focus on the dissemination of knowledge, technology uptake in traditional SME sectors as well as business opportunities.
This conference aims to build momentum for investing in research and innovation, with the brand new 7th Framework Programme straight around the corner.
The event takes place at Scandic Hotel Copenhagen in Denmark in the days 16-18 October 2006 – the main conference runs 17-18 October lunch to lunch.
The Event, offering a major European meeting place for exchanging experiences on crucial issues and best practices, is hosted by the Nordic Council of Ministers and co organised by the European Commission.
Within the context of the development of the European Research Area and the European Higher Education Area there is a growing need to create the necessary conditions to attract and to retain well trained and highly motivated researchers from all over the world, with a special emphasis on early stage researchers and doctoral candidates.
With the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers the European Commission has adopted new instruments to enhance the development, the attractiveness and the competitiveness of a European labour market for researchers.
This conference will explore under which conditions the European researchers’ labour market can be a pole for attraction and to what extend the Charter and the Code are a driving force for enhancing career prospects. The event will serve as an opportunity to evaluate progress made in the implementation of these instruments, to identify models of implementation and explore the difference between the public and the private sector for attracting and managing human resources.
Austrian Presidency Conference - Improving research Policies in Europe through
the Open Method of Coordination
Brussels on 18 May 2006
The Open Method of Co-ordination (OMC) is an innovative mode
of governance, increasingly applied within different spheres
of European policy, in order to support and facilitate Member
States reforms for the implementation of the EU Lisbon Strategy.
As a form of ‘soft law’, many critics have questioned
its effectiveness in influencing structural reform processes
in the Lisbon framework.
A conference entitled “Improving Research Policies in
Europe through the Open Method of Coordination” will take
place in Brussels on 18th May 2006. This event will draw together
high-level representatives from politics and enterprise to discuss
the impact of the OMC in the field of research policy. Panellists
will tackle issues such as the need to improve R&D policy
coordination in Europe; how to strengthen the application of
the OMC in the area of research; and how to further integrate
national R&D policies into the Lisbon Strategy.
Keynote speeches will be delivered by the European Commissioner
for Research, Janez Potočnik and the Austrian Federal Minister
for Education, Science and Culture, Mrs. Elisabeth Gehrer. Panellists
will include the Minister of Economy Science and Innovation
of Flanders, Ms. Fientje Moerman, Vice President, Technology
Policy, Nokia Group, Erkki Ormala, members of the European Union’s
Scientific and Technical Research Committee. 200 participants
will have the opportunity to provide their views on the different
topics and engage in discussion with the panellists.

Unlocking
the potential of the regions in research
Centre Borchette, Brussels, May 12th 2006
A conference to discuss the role of the regions in research
will take place on May 12th at the Centre Borchette, Brussels.
The aim is to look at how the research potential of all Europe’s
regions can be strengthened by bringing together regional authorities,
universities, research centres, enterprises and other interested
parties. For the first time, the Seventh Framework Programme
explicitly addresses the research needs and potential of the
regions. In addition, the programme will address the EU’s
“convergence regions” (less developed regions whose
GDP per capita is less than 75% of the EU average) and “outermost
regions” (Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and French overseas
departments) in order to encourage their greater participation
in EU research activities.
The measures undertaken to achieve these aims could include
twinning, networks for exchanging know-how and expertise, secondments,
acquisition of research equipment and awareness raising activities.

Science
and Society Forum 2005
Brussels, 9-11 March 2005
Science has become ‘hard-wired’ into our society
and permeates every aspect of our lives. As the scientific,
social, ethical and economic stakes get higher, the scientific
community and society at large need to engage in a deep-seated
dialogue. The European Union – and its Member States –
have spearheaded efforts in recent years to draw together the
‘innovation triangle’: science, society and the
economy.
The Science and Society Forum 2005 will review the success of
these efforts and plot a new course forward in the form of a
Charter on the Future of Science in Society.
