    May 19-21, 2008
Institut Pasteur: 28 rue du Docteur Roux, 75015 Paris, France

HIV was isolated 25 years ago. HIV research then and now bear no comparison. While the meeting will understandably take us back to 1983, it seeks to present cutting edge research from the virus to the clinic. It kicks off with structural studies on the virus and moves on to how the host cell tries to restrict replication by a variety of different approaches. The day ends with an overview of the enormous diversity of simian look-alike virus. The second day is resolutely immunological and covers antibodies, T cell responses and immunopathogenesis. The ensemble is tied up by reviewing the impact of human polymorphisms on disease progression. The last day turns to the difficult problems of a vaccine and drug resistance. The changing face of clinical AIDS and the disease burden in the Africa and Asia bring up the rear.

Title  The Metchnikoff's legacy in 2008

    April 28-30, 2008
Institut Pasteur: 28 rue du Docteur Roux, 75015 Paris, France

In 1908, twenty years after having joined the newly created Institut Pasteur, Elie Metchnikoff shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology & Medicine with Paul Ehrlich. This prize was awarded to Metchnikoff for his discovery of phagocytes as the basis of cell-mediated immunity and to Ehrich for his studies on antibodies and humoral immunity. Metchnikoff viewed phagocytosis within the wider concept of "Harmony and Disharmony" that described the complex relationship between pathogens and their hosts. One hundred years later, the importance of Metchnikoff's legacy is increasingly evident. Metchnikoff proposed that phagocytosis was an ancient mechanism originating in primitive metazoans that provided a rapidly operating defense system against microorganisms. Today, we know that phagocytes also plays a crucial role in adaptive immunity in higher organisms, thus reconciling Metchnikoff's cellular immunity with Paul Ehrlich's humoral immunity.

This is achieved by integrating expert knowledge with structured approaches of systematic data reviewing, data grouping and meta analysis in basic science, method assessment and decision-making. Due to structural similarities of the two disciplines, similar approaches might be embraced by toxicology. The ultimate goal of the forum is to start a process which may lead to the development of evidence-based tools for an efficient and transparent assessment of risks of a ever diversifying nature. • Workshop on molecular targets for Cancer
Abbaye de Neumünster, Luxembourg, 28-29 September 2007

With an estimated 2.9 million new cases and 1.7 million deaths each year, cancer remains an important public health problem in Europe. In addition, the ageing of the European population will cause these numbers to continue to increase even if age-specific rates remain constant.
Currently, more than one hundred EC-funded translational cancer research projects are ongoing following peer-reviewed calls for proposals launched during the Sixth Framework Programme's thematic priority Life sciences, Genomics and Biotechnology for Health (2002-2006). We would like to gather excellent scientists working on molecular targets in those and other projects, policymakers and industrial representatives to discuss various aspects of translational research on cancer and put forward solutions that address validation, valorisation and commercialisation of potentially innovative findings on molecular targets emanating from European research on cancer. Scientific posters can be displayed if so wished. The number of attendees is limited to approximately 250.
We look forward to your participation and hope you will join us in Luxemburg for this exciting program. Contact

The European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for their Recruitment as a driving force for enhancing career prospects

      Schwarzenbergplatz 4, Vienna, Austria, 1-2 June 2006

Within the context of the development of the European Research Area and the European Higher Education Area there is a growing need to create the necessary conditions to attract and to retain well trained and highly motivated researchers from all over the world, with a special emphasis on early stage researchers and doctoral candidates.

With the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers the European Commission has adopted new instruments to enhance the development, the attractiveness and the competitiveness of a European labour market for researchers.

This conference will explore under which conditions the European researchers’ labour market can be a pole for attraction and to what extend the Charter and the Code are a driving force for enhancing career prospects. The event will serve as an opportunity to evaluate progress made in the implementation of these instruments, to identify models of implementation and explore the difference between the public and the private sector for attracting and managing human resources.

This event will draw together high-level representatives from politics and enterprise to discuss the impact of the OMC in the field of research policy. Panellists will tackle issues such as the need to improve R&D policy coordination in Europe; how to strengthen the application of the OMC in the area of research; and how to further integrate national R&D policies into the Lisbon Strategy.

Keynote speeches will be delivered by the European Commissioner for Research, Janez Potočnik and the Austrian Federal Minister for Education, Science and Culture, Mrs. Elisabeth Gehrer. Panellists will include the Minister of Economy Science and Innovation of Flanders, Ms. Fientje Moerman, Vice President, Technology Policy, Nokia Group, Erkki Ormala, members of the European Union’s Scientific and Technical Research Committee. 200 participants will have the opportunity to provide their views on the different topics and engage in discussion with the panellists.
